What is BOTOX®?
Botox is a neuromodulator that when injected into targeted muscles, temporarily blocks nerve signals, preventing the muscles from contracting. When used for cosmetic purposes, Botox makes the overlying skin smooth, reducing the appearance of facial fine lines and wrinkles and temporarily preventing the muscle from creating new wrinkles.
Dr. Okuda not only offers Botox for facial cosmetic reasons, he also uses it for therapeutic purposes. Botox can alleviate severe or chronic muscle tension and pain, making it a great option for helping with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, migraines and teeth grinding.
What are Fillers?
Okuda Orthodontics is also a provider of dermal fillers in Las Vegas. The injectables contain a modified form of hyaluronic acid, which is one of the building blocks that gives skin structure. When injected into the treatment area, the hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules in the skin. This adds lift and volume, restores contours and fills in lines and wrinkles. Dr. Okuda can use dermal fillers for a variety of facial cosmetic concerns, including around the mouth to frame and enhance your new smile.
The Botox and Fillers Procedure
Whether you’re a new or existing patient, Dr. Okuda will start the process by talking with you about your health and medical history and your areas of concern. This will let him determine if you’re a candidate for Botox or dermal fillers. If you are, you can usually get the injections right there at your appointment or consultation.
Dr. Okuda will pinpoint the precise locations for your injections. He’ll then inject Botox or filler into your skin using an extremely fine, thin needle. Most patients experience minimal discomfort with Botox and compare the injections to the sensation of a bug bite. With fillers, the solution contains lidocaine, which numbs the area, and makes the process painless.
In 15 minutes or less, the procedure will be finished and you can go about the rest of your day as normal. While you might notice some results in a few days, it takes two weeks for the full effect to be evident. Botox injections last approximately three to four months, while fillers can last up to one to two years, depending on the product used and area that was treated.
Yes. Botox is safe for adults who aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding, who are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the product and who don’t have certain neurological disorders. The injectable contains very small amounts of highly purified protein from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. It has been approved by the FDA since 2002 for cosmetic use, as well as some medical uses.
Dermal fillers are FDA approved and safe for adults who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and who do not have an allergy to lidocaine or gram-positive bacterial proteins. Fillers are made of a modified form of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occuring substance.
At Okuda Orthodontics, we offer Las Vegas Botox injections to treat:
- Crow’s feet (lines at the outer corner of the eyes)
- Bunny lines (lines around the nose)
- Laugh and smile lines
- Forehead lines
- Elevens (worry lines in between the eyebrows)
- Droopy brows (injections in the upper eyebrow area will give you a lift)
- A dimpled chin
- A gummy smile
Dr. Okuda is also an expert in using Botox for therapeutic treatments and offers Botox for:
- Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism)
- TMJ pain
- Facial pain
Botox can be an excellent alternative to surgery for certain oral and facial issues. When using Botox for bruxism, Dr. Okuda injects the masseter muscle, which is the large muscle that moves the jaw. This causes it to temporarily relax, reducing clenching and grinding and the associated jaw pain, wear and tear on your teeth and headaches.
If you have a TMJ disorder, Dr. Okuda can inject Botox into the jaw muscles, temples and forehead, depending on where you have symptoms. This relaxes the jaw muscles and gives the muscles, TMJs and ligaments a chance to heal. By reducing muscle tension, injections can alleviate the related headaches and ear pain as well.
We also offer Botox for migraines in Henderson, NV. There will likely be multiple injection sites around your head and neck. Once Dr. Okuda injects the Botox, it enters the nerve endings and prevents them from releasing the chemicals involved in pain transmission. This helps stop migraines before they start.
At Okuda Orthodontics, we can use fillers to:
- Soften and smooth moderate to severe lines, wrinkles and folds on the face
- Plump the lips and fill in lip lines
- Add definition and contours to areas of the face that have lost volume, including the cheek area
- Enhance or fill shallow areas of the face
- Lift and smooth the area around the mouth to frame your new smile
The side effects for Botox and fillers are generally very mild. After getting dermal fillers, you might have minor bruising, redness, swelling, itching, bumps, tenderness and/or firmness at the injection sites. These side effects will go away within a few days.
As for the Botox side effects, some patients experience minor swelling, redness and pinpoint bruising at the injection sites, which also disappear on their own quickly.
